Self-Care

Self-Care is probably THE most important thing in the world. You won’t be of any use to anyone if your own health and well-being is lacking. The other day I was talking to a friend and telling her how important it is to look after herself. “You are the most important person in your life” I said to her; she looked at me shocked, like I was stupid and that there was no way what I said could be true, because she has a 2 year old son and all. I reiterated my point and used the analogy of the plane safety instructions to get my argument across; I said “you know how when you go on a flight somewhere and in the safety demonstrations they always say to fit your own oxygen masks first before anyone else’s? And you wonder how that can be the case, because surely you’d want to save your kids (or those you love) before yourself? Well, the thing is, if for whatever reason, you pass out while trying to put your child’s oxygen mask on, then you’re both fucked. Whereas, if you fit yours first, at least then you are conscious and capable of helping someone else. So the same goes for everyday life. If you are mentally, physically, and/or emotionally unwell, how good are you to those around you that need you and need your help in order for them to survive and strive?” It was like a light bulb went off in her head, and she realised how much that rang true. You can’t help someone if you yourself aren’t well in the first place.

Ergo; self-care is the most important thing that you can do.

I’ve always been big on self-care. I learnt a long time ago that the only person you can rely on, and all you really have in this life is yourself, so you need to take care of you. You don’t ‘belong’ to anyone, or nobody ‘owns’ you; you should never feel like you need to ask anyone’s permission to do certain things, or you should never feel guilty for spending a little money on yourself to rejuvenate your mind and soul. Go and get that massage, or manicure, or eat that chocolate; take that time off to climb a mountain, or lay on that beach, and don’t you dare feel damn guilty about it. If it heals your heart and soul, you’ll be better off for it. Treat yo’self!

And have a fabulous weekend πŸ™‚

Peace and Love
